National conferences progress

The Rev. Dr Tony Floyd, National Director, Multicultural and Cross-cultural Ministry, led discussion on the work of national conferences during the Uniting Church’s 12th Assembly.

Strong support for Fiji church

The Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia resolved on July 20 to convey its support to the Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma.


Solidarity with Zimbabwe

In the presence of Bishop Simbarashe Sithole of the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe, the 12th Assembly unanimously voted to affirm the Uniting Church’s solidarity with, and prayer for, its partner churches in Zimbabwe.


Assembly commits to ‘economy of life’

Uniting Church members, councils and agencies will be asked to commit themselves to living at peace with each other and the planet, following the adoption of a statement at the 12th triennial Assembly on July 20.

The document, An Economy of Life: Re-Imagining Human Progress for a Flourishing World, was prepared by the Assembly agency UnitingJustice Australia and addresses the “crises” humankind and the planet are facing.

Assembly votes to support West Papua

The 12th Assembly today passed by consensus a proposal that it urge the Australian Federal Government to continue to encourage the Indonesian Government to more thoroughly and respectfully implement the Special Autonomy status of West Papua and to uphold the human rights of West Papua citizens.


Church urges overseas aid boost

The Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia has commended the Rudd Government for its commitment to boosting the aid budget to 0.5 per cent of gross national income (GNI) by 2015.


Church tackles unjust trade arrangements

The Uniting Church in Australia 12th Assembly has adopted a document challenging free trade, neo-liberalism and “market fundamentalism”.

UnitingCare challenges the church

As members of Assembly prepared to consider the “key directions” for its next three years of work, some members and visitors gathered for a lunchtime forum to hear leaders from three UnitingCare agencies. A major theme was how the role of the agencies was understood in the life of the wider Uniting Church.


Prayer flags fly for the Assembly

The production of vibrantly-coloured prayer flags kept Assembly members engaged and enthused during the Assembly agencies’ presentation on July 18.

The focus of the presentation was making connections between the various parts of the Assembly and the theme of the 12th Assembly: Living Water Thirsty Land.

Hope for a flourishing world

The Uniting Church’s 12th Assembly is considering a statement which describes the hope the church could offer a suffering world. It addresses growing inequality, the threat of climate change and an economic system driven by consumerism and unrestrained growth.
