Peace Like a Diamond: a ‘gift’ to church

The Rev. Dr Dean Drayton referred to Peace Like a Diamond: Facets of Peace as an, “Amazing compendium of information and practical stuff,” when launching the book at the 12th Assembly on July 20.

My name is Jasmine Edwards and I am a 19 year old student.

I study Communications at Wollongong University part time. I attend an Assemblies Of God church in Sutherland, Sydney. My parents attend a Uniting Church congregation in Ramsgate, Sydney.

The 12th Assembly is the first to feature wireless internet access for delegates’ use. Does this enhance the quality of participants’ Assembly experience or is it a distraction from what is going on at the meeting? Jonathan Foye caught up with some of the Assembly delegates to find out.


Ecumenical voice of positivity

Throughout the 12th Assembly meeting there has been a distinct sense of inclusion and readiness to listen and learn from others.

Assembly chaplains help ease the pain of the process

The 12th Assembly has seen some tense and trying discussion about several proposals, but particularly in consideration of the historic new preamble to the Constitution, which acknowledges the First Peoples of Australia and the troubled history of their past in relation to the Christian church.

Holy spirit rains in song

“Holy Spirit Rain” is the official anthem for the 12th Assembly. The song was a collaborative effort of Uniting Church members Phil Newton and Michael Earl.


What's on today: Tuesday 21st July

Last day of Assembly

July 21, the final day of the 12th national Assembly, begins as it has every day, with worship and Bible study.

The Assembly will then move on to address outstanding business. Items scheduled include proposals relating to property, directions for the next triennium and the Assembly task group report on national conferences.

Business unfinished at noon will be referred to the Assembly Standing Committee and closing worship will then commence.


12th Assembly elects Standing Committee members

The 12th Assembly Standing Committee members have been elected.


Maintaining a diverse Assembly

A proposal to simplify the formula by which the membership of Assembly decided has generated a surprising amount of discussion since it was introduced on day one. The debate turned into a discussion of the very nature of Assembly.


The Assembly that cried

Many people cried at the 12th Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia, meeting at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. Tears of sorrow, regret, grief, anger and frustration. And sometimes tears of joy.
