12th Assembly 2009

Strong support for Fiji church

The Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia resolved on July 20 to convey its support to the Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma.

Partner churches there are seeking to work under highly restrictive government regulations.

The Sydney meeting resolved also to invite Australian church members to pray for the Fiji churches especially at the time of its scheduled annual conference.

The proposal was accepted by a unanimous decision.

It followed the Fiji Government’s ban on the Methodist Church’s annual conference, scheduled for mid-August. Many thousands were expected to attend.

The President of the Uniting Church in Australia, Alistair Macrae, will convey the Assembly’s decision to the Fiji church.

The Australian church’s overseas aid agency UnitingWorld will give practical expression to the decision and offer suggestions as to how congregations, presbyteries, synods and members can support the Fiji churches.
