12th Assembly 2009

NCYC 2011: better than ever

The National Christian Youth Convention (NCYC) is the Assembly’s largest event, held biennially with a different host synod each time.

Michael Jeffrey, from the organising team for NCYC 2011, addressed the 12th Assembly asking members to consider sending young people they know to the next convention.

17july_pm_ncyc-michaeljeffrey 8Mr Jeffrey described the “gift” of a deepened faith that was first given to him in 1989, at the age of 15, when he travelled across the desert to his first NCYC in Perth.

Recognising that most members of Assembly were too old to take advantage of the gift of NCYC, he urged members to take up the promotional postcards on their tables and think of two young people, holding their image in mind and praying for them.

Following the NCYC National Consultation, held in May this year, the Rev. Sandy Boyce, National Faith Development Consultant, expressed excitement about a rejuvenated NCYC.

“Despite word that NCYC 2009 might have been the last, 2011 looks set to bring the convention back better than ever,” she said.

NCYC 2009, which has a theme of “Turn it up”, will be held at Southport School on the Gold Coast in Queensland between December 29, 2010, and January 4, 2011.

Mr Jeffrey said over 220 people had already registered and that speakers would include Gillian Best, from Ireland, and Christopher Wayne, an Australian entertainer and magician.

Mr Jeffrey also noted that past conventions struggled with attendance numbers and had trouble breaking even, relying on grants and donations. He reassured the Assembly that NCYC 2011 had taken steps to address those issues.
